The thing about health is it’s a forever journey. Not just and end-point or an outcome that we’re taught to fixate on. If we can get past the outcome then we can start to see health in a new way – a way that works. Inside this post I share, five simple ways to change your health this year.
Today I’m declaring; I am healthy!
The funny thing, I never thought I’d say that until I met my ‘goal’ weight. This is why I’m even more excited to tell you I am healthy, even though I’m nowhere near the end of my health journey.
Through my healing journey, that is one thing that I learned in a long, drawn-out process {thanks to my stubborn self} was that we don’t have to meet all of our goals or look like perfection to be considered healthy.
Health comes in a lot of different shapes, sizes, ages, and races. It’s not limited to what ‘society’ tells us.
Health is so much more than that. Yet, in the same breath so much easier than the complex systems we have in place.
Today, I wanted to share how I got to this place, of declaring health over my life and where I want to go. Ultimately, I want to remind you that:
You can’t lose weight to get healthy. You have to get healthy to lose weight.
What does health look like for you?
In this post, I share five ways five simple ways to change your health this year.
What does health look like for you?
Have you ever asked yourself that question? What does health look like for you? Too often, I fear we let the health industry decide what health looks like, ignoring our very vessel of health, the body. That’s why I want to bring the spotlight back to your body – to remind you it is the key to your health.
The question becomes, outside of everything you’ve been taught, what feels healthy to you?
Not just skinny healthy or diet healthy.
Not just beauty healthy.
But what would health look like for you?
I wonder, are you chasing the wrong vision of what health is? Maybe health is waking up and hitting the trail for some more sun and steps? Maybe health looks like reading a good book instead of scrolling social media. Perhaps, health is a baked potato for dinner rather than fearing carbs.
There are a hundred thousand ways to be healthy, but the only way to achieve it is to do what is right for you.
So the question remains, what does that look like for you?
what does health mean to you?
The hardest part about getting healthy is figuring out what that looks like for you. To break down the health myths, sort through the confusion, and open up to see your body in a new way. To support what only it can do.
How do you get there?
Here are five simple ways to change your health this year.
1. become self-aware
What would you find if you slowed down to hear, see, and experience? Would you start to listen to the signals your body is throwing out at you? Would you know how the interactions with your environment are affecting your mind and body?
We have to become self-aware to achieve lasting health. Take note of what your body needs, and what makes it feel good? Create space in your life to start living self-aware and write it down – all of it – even if it seems silly or insignificant. It matters.
2. what makes you feel good
It’s hard to get healthy when you hate every second of what you have to do to get there. Can we start putting fun and enjoyment back into health? Let’s be real, what’s the point of health when it makes you feel miserable? It’s like taking two giant steps in the wrong direction.
The truth, health is nothing more than what makes you feel good – not just temporary good like that slice of cheesecake, but to the core of who you are good. The good that gives you energy, puts a spunk in your personality, gives you a glow, and helps you thrive. What is that?
Start a list and record what things “fill you up” and give you energy?
3. create a vision of health
The only way to achieve health is if you can see health. That means, like anything, you need a vision of what this looks like. So it’s time to go back to the sketch board – to forever erase any ideas that are not from you and start to create an idea of what health looks like for you.
Start to answer these questions:
- What would a healthy you do daily?
- Think about what you would wear?
- What books would they read?
- What would their social life look like?
Break it all down in detail until you understand, in an ideal yet realistic situation, what does a healthy you do on the average workday?
4. create a process of rhythms
Now that you have a vision, you can create action. Instead of putting together a list of things you think you ‘should’ be doing, let’s create a list of things you want to do. Things that align with where you want to go – that align with your vision.
Start to give attention and focus on these things. Being disciplined to do what is good for you. Start with one action creating a daily rhythm and then move onto another one until you’ve achieved your vision of health.
5. Stay consistent
Don’t give up – there’s nothing quick about health. The journey of health never ends, which doesn’t have to be a downfall, but the greatest blessing there is. Instead of focusing on an outcome, {which doesn’t exist in the health space} focus on living true to your vision in the present. Taking small daily action adds up to a tremendous change in time.
It’s like a snowball – once you start, the progress keeps building. But you can’t quit before you start. Stay in it, be consistent and show up every day, believing that if you keep going, you’ll start feeling better and better every day.
