Metabolism is the sum total of all chemical reactions that are going on in your body on any given day. It this the machine that runs homeostasis. There is a lot of chatter about metabolism including; metabolism slowing down with age, and wrecking your life just to name a few. While we can talk about metabolism and weight {because everyone wants to know} we first need to acknowledge how to reset your metabolism.
We need to understand how to get your metabolism unjammed and working smoothly. In this post we’re going to learn 4 ways to reset your metabolism.

what is metabolism
Our metabolism is the key regulator in all communication and signals of the body. It is constantly working towards balance and homeostasis. As Dr. Jade Teta explains:
The most important thing to understand about the metabolism is that it is changeable. In fact, that is its very purpose. The natural action of the metabolism to adapt and react is systemically ignored in the weight loss industry.
Most experts will tell you there is only one way to ‘fix’ your metabolism and that is to eat less and exercise more. While this generally works in the short term for most people, it rarely if ever works long-term for anyone. Therefore, people get stuck, they hit a plateau, they lose energy and they lose focus.
We believe {or are told} we’re not working hard enough, we’re lazy or non compliant.
Yet when we look at metabolism in general it is a much more sophisticated process, but at the same time easily adaptable and changeable. This takes a change in what we do and what we believe.
The first truth: There is NOT nor ever will be a one sized fits all approach.
change your metabolism
Changing your metabolism means changing your mind. Instead of trying to beat your body into submission or forcing it to do something and expecting results, we must instead start to work with our body.
Work with our metabolism.
Remember, our metabolism works to create balance and homeostasis. It can either work really hard against you or it can work simply with you. That is a choice we make each day.
I assume while most of us want to achieve a healthy metabolism, a sense of balance and ease, then we are going to opt out of the part about beating your body into submission.
So how do we change our metabolism?
Believing that your metabolism is changeable and adaptable rather than stuck is the first step. The second step is understanding that your metabolism is changeable and adaptable meaning that doing the same thing day in and day out and expecting it to work is false.
Which brings us to the key point; flexibility.
This has got to be the worst health word in the status of health words. Flexibility, what?!?
Unfortunately flexibility means “not exact” which throws all rules, strategies, eat this not that, calorie counting and every other diet plan under the sun out. Since exact can only mean short-term when it comes to our metabolism, it adapts to that and you come to a stand still.
Flexibility is going to be your golden ticket to boosting your metabolism and working in balance with your body. Working in balance with your body means listening to your body or what we know as biofeedback.
biofeedback
Metabolic Effect has become famous for one of the greatest metabolism biofeedback chains that we know. It is coined as the HEC concept. HEC is an acronym that stands for hunger, energy and cravings. These are all biofeedback sensations that tell you how your metabolism is doing and how it is reacting.
We know that when your metabolism has adapted to your diet, it then begins to defend its body fat stores. Once this occurs you must change-up what you are doing and try something new. As quoted from Metabolic Effect’s website, this is when your biofeedback loop is telling you to change something up:
We have a catchy rhyme for you to remember with your HEC biofeedback loop. HEC is pronounced ‘heck’ and it rhymes with check. When “your HEC is in check”, your metabolism is likely balance and stable. When “HEC is not in check”, that is an indication your metabolism is switching gears and trying to adapt.
Basically, if you experience hunger, cravings and a lack of change in energy that are different or more insatiable than normal, it’s time to switch things up and reset your metabolism.
4 ways to reset your metabolism
Dr. Teta refers to these as the “metabolic toggles”. These toggles are the things you can switch up to prevent you from getting into compensation mode.
These toggles include:
- ELEL – eat less, exercise less
- EMEM – eat more, exercise more
- ELEM – eat less, exercise more
- EMEL – eat more, exercise less
It’s not about staying in one too long, or trying to control them perfectly. It’s about showcasing this in life. If you eat too little one day or too much over the weekend. It isn’t going to break you. In fact, in time it could actually help your metabolism.
The key is not doing any one thing too long and always remember that metabolism is adaptable and changeable, we just have to learn to be flexible.
Yes, we’re adding that word to the health dictionary because really it is so freeing {if you can get beyond that anxiety inducing part of not knowing what will EXACTLY work}.
To learn more about these toggles listen to the podcast with Dr. Teta and get the first right step to incorporating this into your life.
final thoughts
Sometimes, it just takes stepping back and realizing what we’re doing is or isn’t working. It takes self-awareness, understanding our bodies and ultimately hearing our biofeedback signals.
While I would like to tell you there is the perfect one sized fits all approach, that is really far from the truth. Metabolism is very individualized and unfortunately there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way of doing things. There is groupings, places to start but no standards.
Instead we’re just going for structured flexibility.
I’m always fascinated that everyone wants rules yet we’re all rebellious by nature. If you can believe it, even for one minute, this could change everything about your health. Simply because you’ll learn to be more in-tuned to YOUR health. Your unique health.
