hormonal effect of collagen
Collagen is a dietary supplement and has become very popular lately with the rise of the bone broth reputation. I talk more about collagen here and here but for now we’re just diving into the effect of collagen on our hormones.
Our hormones are our body’s main communication network. They are the signals that tell your body what to do, how to respond, what to burn, what to use, etc. They are vital if not the most critical component to look at when healing the body.
Why is collagen so important?
- Collagen provides the right ratio of vital amino acids that help to even out the other more common amino acids in our diets. Specifically helping to balance out the amino acids like tryptophan that are known to increase aging. Like anything, it’s not to say one amino acid is bad, it’s to say that eating them out of balance is harmful. Collagen helps to provide amino acid balance. Which creates equilibrium of our metabolic rate, thyroid function and hormone production.
- These vital amino acids are also essential to produce healthy levels of hormones.
- Collagen helps with gut health, creating a healthy microbiome. It repairs gaps in the tight junctions of our cells {leaky gut} and preventing the inflammatory response that can come from food passing though these gaps undigested.
- The amino-acid glycine found in high concentrations in collagen helps with liver detoxification. This increases liver function, protecting our body from being worn out and bogged down by toxins.
- Collagen offsets cortisol imbalance which leads to a more stable blood sugar, weight maintenance/loss, even mood and more energy.
Not to mention it is estimated our body stops producing collagen around the age of 18. Thus why the fountain of youth starts declining quickly from that point on creating wrinkles, sun spots, cellulite, scarring, etc. Collagen is a quick and simple supplement that can change the way you feel, increase your metabolism and help balance hormones.
Combine this with cocoa powder and you have a winning mix.
hormone benefit of cocoa
Chocolate lovers unite!
This is your time to shine because cocoa can in fact be a superfood for your body. Here’s the simple facts on how chocolate {cocoa} can help balance your hormones.
Raw, organic cocoa powder, free of milk, sugar, pesticides and processed ingredients really could be classified as a superfood. In fact, it has some medicinal uses including healing hypertension, diabetes management and increasing blood flow to the brain. But hormonally speaking, chocolate has a long association with the feelings of love, happiness and ease. This is the hormonal value shining.
Cocoa powder has a wide variety of phytonutrients, chemicals and neurotransmitter precursors that make you get all the warm and fuzzy inside. This means it lowers your stress levels increasing your brain’s levels of satisfaction and relaxation. Given that our stress response is debilitating to our natural hormone response, cocoa can help reduce this.
Using cocoa raises serotonin and dopamine, reducing the cortisol response. This has a great effect on balancing blood sugar levels {reducing weight} and decreasing inflammation. It also releases a chemical called GLP-1 which is a gut hormone that signals to the brain you are full as well as releasing the appropriate amounts of insulin having a direct effect on your ability to burn fat.
The difference is that chocolate and cocoa are not the same thing. Cocoa is the powder form of cocao beans where as chocolate is cocao powder with cocoa butter, milk, sugar, preservatives, etc. However, using cocoa powder in recipes gives you the value of cocao with the same great taste of chocolate.
