I get a lot of questions about organic versus non-organic especially – is organic better for our bodies? And what about the herbicides and pesticides being sprayed on our food? What are the potentially harmful effects on our bodies?
This post on glyphosate, organic food and supplements is proudly sponsored by MegaFood®. The best place to get pure and natural supplements.
This topic is near and dear to my heart. Not only do I live in rural Iowa, where farm life is the livelihood, but I’ve also been through a health storm of my own which has caused me to pay careful attention to what goes into my body. And then there’s the question of how do we balance a respect for the agricultural community and still maintain necessary concern for the way agriculture is being practiced today?
It’s such a fine line for me. I know countless farmers myself and absolutely see the divide. But at the end of the day, what I recognize is the nutritional deficiencies and toxic load that our bodies experience because of the harm that is being done.
The question arises, is it simply a lack of knowledge or funding? Is it a higher power that is controlling the source? I’m not exactly sure why we’ve taken this turn and while I’m not getting into political views on today’s show, but what we are going to do is take a deep dive into a key the agricultural world; the herbicide, glyphosate.
We’re going to break down what it is, what it’s doing to our bodies, how it’s impacting the soil and what we can do about it. Tune into today’s show to uncover the answer to the question, is organic better for you?

what is glyphosate
Glyphosate is one of the most common herbicides used in agriculture today and is touted as being one of the most effective weed killers.
Glyphosate acts as a non-selective herbicide, meaning it will kill most plants. It does this by preventing the plants from making certain proteins that are needed for plant growth. Glyphosate works to stop the specific enzyme pathway necessary for plants and some microorganisms to survive.
Most simply put, glyphosate acts as an antibiotic.
the problem
Of course, glyphosate is a great tool for farmers, especially given one of their biggest issues is simply weed control. We know that you can increase yields by decreasing the presence of competing organisms, and in the case of plants, that’s weeds. The problem, of course, is the process of ceasing the enzymatic pathway in plants and microorganism.
While we tend to focus solely on the toxic ingredients in glyphosate, maybe the larger issue is its action as an antibiotic. We talk about this in detail on the podcast – tune in to find out. But one thing is clear – this antibiotic, while killing the weeds, is also killing off healthy microorganisms in the soil that are beneficial to plant production.
This trickles down to the nutrient value of the plants. The declining health of the soil decreases the nutrient value of the plants, and therefore your body is not able to retain those essential nutrients. Not to mention, the nutrients from the soil provide our bodies with healthy microorganisms to keep our GI tract running efficiently.
how to fix it
Glyphosate concerns are not limited to our health and what it’s doing to the environment. It’s not just about the toxins or the potential carcinogens. It’s all of this together and, ultimately, how glyphosate decreases the health of plants. Including, the vital array of microorganisms in the soil and what our bodies are unable to retain.
The decrease in good bacteria from the soil and a decrease in natural nutrition from plants, both of which our bodies need to work properly, combined with the antibiotic effect and toxic load, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Our solution now is to avoid glyphosate or at least work to reduce it. To come full circle, this means that organic does matter {If finances don’t allow, at least check out the Dirty Dozen list and commit to buying those 12 organically}.
Of course, other solutions involve:
- Not spraying your lawn with fertilizer or herbicides.
- Sticking with organic whenever possible.
- Growing your own garden and/or joining a garden club.
- Filtering your water.
don’t forget this
The greatest support you can offer your body is more nutrition. Not just in food, because as we mention, the nutrient density of food is declining with the health of our soil. But finding real sources of supplemental nutrition.
Nutrients are needed for every single function inside the body. In my opinion, the best way to prevent disease is to provide what our body needs. The safe place, the right environment, and the tools it needs to do the job it was designed to do.
Nutrition and supplementation may be just the key your body needs to go from surviving to thriving. But of course, it comes from the right supplements
my brand of choice
Not all supplements are created equal, and the supplements aisle can be quite difficult to navigate. Today, supplements contain nutrients either, derived synthetically or from real food. But research shows that synthetic nutrients are not absorbed quite as well as the real deal {1}.
The most important thing is to know the source of the product. Just like food, supplements can be tainted throughout the production process.
That’s why I like to stick to high-quality brands that are transparent and use third-party testing to further validate trusted ingredients and product effectiveness in the form of certification. If you’re on the search for supplements, I would recommend MegaFood®.
They’re taking the concept of “keep it real” to the next level by building trust with the consumer {us} through showing us everything they do from 24/7 live facility cams to sharing results from audits, the farmers they partner with to obtain the whole food ingredients and obtaining valuable certifications that allow consumers to rest assured knowing each product is effective and made with only the highest-quality ingredients.
If you’re looking for a good supplement company that you can trust, MegaFood® is one I stand by for quality. And get this -MegaFood® is the first supplements brand to have its entire line of vitamins and supplements Certified Glyphosate Residue Free by The Detox Project {amazing!}.
Some of the products I’m loving from MegaFood® include:
- This probiotic I actually noticed a difference.
- Magnesium – The most recommended supplement I have.
- All of their booster powders like Daily Maca for Women and Daily Turmeric.
