Calories in equals calories out seem to be the longest-running diet claim in history. While the equation is partially true, it’s not entirely accurate. Today I share the truth about calories and what matters most.
Confused – this is the number one answer I got when I asked you the most significant health hurdle you face. Confusion, chaos, and overwhelm. I couldn’t agree more.
But where do we go from here?
I sat to ponder this question and dive back to the roots of who I am and why I started this in the beginning. What I found was simple. I want to teach you exactly how your body works, so you no longer have to question the millions of diet claims you’re sure to see in the next decade.
Today we start by breaking down everyday health and wellness lies, bringing in the truth of how our body works, even more, why it was designed.
Lie number one happens to be the longest-running claim in history: calories in equals calories out. Are you questioning what the truth about calories is? Today I break down everything you need to know about:
- If the equation matters?
- Are all calories created equal?
- How calories influence my weight?
And so much more! Make sure you listen to the podcast to get all of the details.
do calories matter?
Calories were at the front of the diet industry — the leading and oldest run plan to take back control of people’s weight problems. The question becomes, did it work?
I think that is an easy answer. Looking around, I’d argue that we are further than when we started this health journey – and yet we’re still here trying to run equations, download apps, and weigh our food hoping that it will somehow magically work for me, even if no one else.
Today, I want to bring hope back into your life.
To tell you, you don’t have to be a slave to calories in the form of food or working out to see results.
It’s so much more than just how much you consume versus burn and more about what your body does with it.
This is what matters in everything – what your body is doing with what is provided.
Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as a basic equation – but it’s not as complex as we make it.
what is a calorie
A calorie is nothing more than a measure of energy. The problem with measuring calories is it’s not just a measure of how much but what. The what being – what your body does with the calories.
Just because you eat 650 calories at a meal doesn’t mean your body is going to breakdown and absorb all of those calories. Not to mention how do you distinguish if your body will use them or store them?
Insert complicated health. When we lose hold of basic equations promising results and have to turn to a tool we know relatively nothing about – that is your body.
But this is the only way, and I want to teach you how.
What influences what your body does?
For both calories in and calories out, there are several components in place which are equally as influenced by other things.
Here’s a breakdown of the influence on calories in:
And a breakdown on calories out:
As you can see – a calorie isn’t just a calorie. It’s how your body is influencing it. So the question no longer is how many calories you should consume, but how can you best work with your body in health for health?
Five ways to influence your body
There are a lot of ways to change what your body does with calories. But it always has to come from a place of trust. Anytime your body feels threatened, it enters into survival mode – the intricately intended way to keep humans populated on this earth.
So the goal must be to work with your body, keeping it in balance so that it steers clear of the thing sabotaging your health – that is survival mode. Here are five ways to open up your body in health to use calories positively:
1. Create A Healthy Relationship with food
What you believe about what you eat changes what your body does with it. Leading me to think that we aren’t just what we eat; we are what we think about what we eat.
Work on your relationship with food, which means you need to work on your relationship with yourself. You are not a victim of your health; you are the provider of it. Think good things about the life-source of dense nutrients allowing your body to thrive. Change your thoughts to change your waist.
2. Notice other sources of filling energy
Food is not the only place we see energy working in the body. We have thermal energy to keep your body temperature in homeostasis, gravitational energy, mechanical energy, chemical energy, and more.
It’s easy to think that calories are the only way to store or burn energy, but it’s far from the truth. Our emotions are playing a roll in how much energy we have or how little – even influencing how our body burns energy.
There are a lot of outside sources that can provide more energy to the body that isn’t food. Incorporate more of these into your life:
- Prayer
- Sunlight
- Exercise + Movement
- Positive Thinking
- Giving to Others
- Self-Care
- Being Creative
- Healthy Relationships
3. Enjoy the food you eat
Again, this is a component of the mind. What we think about what we eat is a perception, meaning it’s a choice – not an end all be all. If you want to live a healthier life, you have to learn to enjoy the food you eat. Not just enjoy it for the sake of the experience behind it, but enjoy the taste and what it does to your body.
4. Enhance the Quality
Quality matters more than quantity. Take note that not all calories are created equal. There is a big difference between the 100 calorie snack pack and 100 calorie apple. They provide different nutrients and qualities that change what your body does with it.
We can’t just assume the number of calories is the answer when all calories are crated differently inside the body. Think seasonal in what you eat, following suit with the biological and bacterial changes that happen with the changes of season.

5. Get Better Sleep
Sleep changes everything. It is the very essence of health, mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you do nothing else, make sure you take the necessary steps to help you sleep deeper. If we’re not sleeping, we’re not healing.
get the results you want
Your results aren’t dieting dependent – they’re behavior depending
The answer is to create consistent, sustainable daily rhythms that help you positively impact energy in ad energy out.
Allowing you to fit into the body you were given so that you can be proud of yourself in whatever size you’ve been designed.
