The Holidays are quickly approaching and there are two scenarios:
- You are one of those people who can’t even dream up picking up a book let alone reading one over the holidays.
- Or you make time to sit down, curl up by the fire (am I dreaming?) and dig into a few of your favorite books.
We could do a third option and that is you read because you’re wasting time in the car or the endless hours at the airport. Regardless of your story, I’m going to persuade you to read more. Not read like a homework task. Something that is being forced upon you. But read because there is something so wonderful about challenging your mind, while relaxing, learning, growing and purely enjoying something for what it is.
If I’m honest with you, a few years ago I would never have picked up a book out of desire. And I definitely was never the child who enjoyed any aspect of reading and comprehension. I was the math and science kid who’d rather work on problems than study words. But I can promise, once I experienced reading out of a desire and not out of a command my eyes were opened.
Now I can fully say that I LOVE to read. Well read a good book. I will still shut it and not finish one that just isn’t catchy enough to keep me in full attention.
Here’s the deal though, while picking up a good book in all of its paper glory is my jam, with three kids this doesn’t always happen. So I sneak in books where I can and that includes listening to them in the car. Similar to books on tape, only much more ‘hip’ you can do the same thing with Audible. Just download the book and listen on your phone or tablet no matter where you are. Be warned though there is something crazy hypnotizing in its own sort of way. But it is a secret weapon in getting more books read.
So in all of that, I hope that you find time this holiday season, or maybe even make it a goal for the upcoming year to read more books. To fully read for what it is. In this post I’m going to share five of my favorite health books of this year. Ones I think you will want to read {perfect for gift giving as well}.
P.S. These aren’t necessarily diet related. But to me health is more than what we put in our bodies, but healthy our minds and lifestyle is as well. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.
#1 Breaking Busy: How to Find Peace and Purpose in a World of Crazy.
After getting really sick in January and really unable to get most of what I needed to done, reading wasn’t on my list. But through my illness I learned that it was in fact, okay to ask for help. Through this challenge, Breaking Busy was given to me and it really transformed my view on what I could and should be doing. Not to mention, I fully believe this book was a critical step in transforming my health for the better. I can’t recommend this one enough. Author, Alli Worthington, is funny, witty and yet practical. Want to hear more from her? Check out my interview with Alli here.
#2 Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less
My life was in chaos at the beginning of the year and yet I really never understood. I thought that was life. After going through my illness, changing my focus and getting back to the basics, I picked up this book out of recommendation from my husband. {Most likely because I cried literally every single night for months that I couldn’t do everything that I was trying to.} It is truly a great book for helping you to sort through your life, finding the essential and putting a complete focus on becoming your best at what that is while enjoying your life. It was the first time I realized that if I didn’t set time or make time for what I enjoyed, someone or something else will.
#3 The Power of When: Find the Best Time to Do Everything
Dr. Michael Breus is a powerhouse when it comes to health knowledge. This book will change the way you look at health and do health in a simplified approach that actually works. I am very passionate about this book because it is not just another diet but a life transformation that takes into account your own chronotype. How you were intricately designed and formed. If you want a sneak peek at his philosophy you can listen to him on Simple Roots Radio here and here. Life changing and mind-blowing is how I describe his book.
#4 Daring Greatly: How the Courage To Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way WE Live, Love, Parent and Lead.
Every day is uncertain. Everything we do can seem vulnerable hard and maybe even too risky to try. Daring greatly is a book about courage. About true courage, the courage to stand firm and true to who you are no matter the circumstance. Obviously this year has been quite the ride. If I had to pick a word for it, it would be growth. I grew and stretched in ways I didn’t even know was possible. While I’m grateful for it and wouldn’t change a thing about this year, I have to say that this book provided the courage I needed to not hit quit. To keep going and even more than that, to wake up ready, on fire and passionate about each day. Brene Brown does an incredible job of opening your eyes to the wonder and full joy we are missing out on through stories and practical application.
#5 Woman Code: Perfect your Cycle, Amplify your Fertility, Supercharge Your Sex Drive and Become a Powerful Source.
If you’re looking for a new and natural approach to your hormones. To finally supercharge your hormones and get your flow running smoothly, this book will open your eyes to the possibility. Broken down from fertility issues, depression, lack of sex drive and everything else that relates to your hormones. This book gives you the tools to take and use immediately to find relief from your symptoms. I highly recommend this for all woman and even men who are looking to better understand woman.
If you are dreaming about reading these books but wondering where you will find the time. I want to tell you the tool that allowed me to have more time to read and do the other things I only wished I had time for. The tool to help me manage my schedule, finances and my meal planning. Basically, the one thing that helped me to write out my life, schedule my life, filling my time with what I choose to fill it with. This meant scheduling time to read.
