There is a lot of opinions on cleansing and detoxing and if it is safe. Some good, others not, but in this podcast I undercover the truth about the best way to detox your body and the one thing you need to know.
Juice cleanses, coffee enemas, water cleanse, supplement regimens, tinctures, potions and more. There is a lot of thought on how we should cleanse and detox our bodies. But I like to argue there is one big thing that we are missing in traditional “detox” thought.
That understanding is how our body naturally detoxifies.
While it’s common to think of all the ways our body is working against us, like your inability to lose those last 20 pounds. Surely that is your body, the villain of our story. But truth be told your body is ‘for you’ more than you will ever know.
All those things we’d wish it could do, it can. But rather than trying to constantly fight against your body, you have to learn to work with it. To create the right space and environment to allow your body to do the job it was designed, like detoxing.
On today’s podcast, I share how your body actually detoxifies itself and the best way to detox your body.

the big idea
The big idea that I promote when it comes to detoxification and cleansing is creating a space to allow your body to do it itself.
Your body detoxifies itself daily. In fact, every hour your body is working on filtering out toxins, bacteria, viruses and other metabolites your body doesn’t need.
While there are multiple detox organs and systems involved including your GI system, lungs, kidneys, skin and lymphatic system, there is one main organ who actually completes the detoxification pathway. That organ is your liver. Which happens to be responsible for more than 500 vital functions.
the detox pathways
I’m going to try my best to give you a quick rundown on liver detoxification, which is actually an incredibly complicated process. Each step in the process changes a toxic chemical into something that is not toxic or something that can be removed easily from the body.
Essentially the phases of detoxification take a fat-soluble toxin and convert it into a water-soluble form that can be released via the kidneys or colon. This transformation happens in two detox phases and one intermediate phase.
phase one
This is the reactive phase. It takes toxins that are not very reactive and turns them into free radicals. It is most often associated with being the first line of defense against toxins.
Phase 1 consists of a group of enzymes known as the cytochrome P450 family. These enzymes help neutralize recreational drugs and substances like alcohol, caffeine and other drugs.
The by-products of this phase need to move through phase 2 to further neutralize so that they can be removed by the body. If they are unable to pass into phase 1 the toxins will then start to build up, and stay in the liver where they can damage DNA and proteins.
the intermediary phase
This is the space from which phase 1 of detoxification has happened but phase 2 hasn’t begun. While it seems like there is quite a gap, they actually are supposed to fluidly move from one phase right unto the next. However, on occasion or when the toxic load is high creating toxicity in the body, you may not have enough of the precursor, glutathione to enter phase two.
This causes an imbalance between phase 1 and phase 2, which results in severe toxic reactions due to the build-up of toxic intermediate forms. This is where you may see the most detrimental side-effects of toxic build-up.
phase two
In this phase of detoxification, the metabolites from phase 1 are further neutralized as well as any remaining toxins. It is called the conjugation phase which means that a protective compound binds to the toxin converting it to a water-soluble molecule that can be excreted.
Again, if the liver cells are taxed and not functioning well, phase 2 detoxification slows down and increases the toxic load by allowing the buildup of toxic intermediates in the intermediary phase.
toxic buildup
In a healthy body, toxins rapidly move through phase 1 and 2 of detoxification where it is then excreted by the body. This is the natural detoxification pathways we want to restore because in this phase you see health.
Unfortunately, it is too easy in today’s world to get toxic build-up. In fact, your liver needs a lot of help. It’s scary how many chemicals your body has to process on any given day, but according to the environmental protection agency, there are over 70,000 total chemicals that we have the potential to be exposed to every day in production and around 15,000 of these chemicals are of concern for our health.
We’re exposed to toxins in the food that we eat, water that we drink, in synthetic materials like plastic, clothing, building material, in the air as well as by-products of our own body.
The good news is our body has the blueprint, the steps needed to naturally detoxify. We just have to create that space so we no longer have to suffer from the toxic buildup in our liver and body.
how to cleanse
Truth be told, I think it’s nearly impossible to escape toxins to a point below our toxic threshold. With this said, I think it is critical that everyone do a yearly or biyearly cleanse or detox protocol.
Now I’m not talking some crazy water cleanse, or juice fast but a few weeks of strictly cleaning up your diet and environment as well as provide extra rest for your body to do what it was designed.
What I mean is things like:
- More organic produce
- Less meat {which is just hard to digest}
- Less inflammatory causing foods
- More antioxidants
- More sleep
- Less intense workouts
- Less stress
- More rest
- Laughter
- More gratitude
- A better mindset
- More
It’s about reducing as many toxins and stresses from your life as possible. I know, easier said than done, but we are capable of creating space and that’s all your body needs.
Nourishment.
It doesn’t need endless supplements or the strict elimination of food altogether, maybe just more attention.
As I always say, just like changing the oil in your care, your body needs some fresh oil at least once every year. Because no matter how healthy you are the toxins still build up.
