Welcome to Iowa.
If you’ve been following along in my newsletter series (subscribe here) then you know we’re making some big changes to the SRW blog. It’s all real life, all the time whether that be pretty or not. And just to start it off I thought you all should meet the newest members of our family. Notice it was plural…and no I didn’t have twins. Baby happenings are over in this house so don’t get your hopes up.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t keep adding to the fury, four-legged category. World I’d like you to meet Sage and Dill, our milk goats. Aren’t they just the cutest. Okay, I’m a sucker for animals, I just can’t help it. Lucky for the hubs, the other three wee ones are just as fond of them as their mamma making it nearly impossible to turn down such cute things, especially when they provide life-giving nutrients.
Goat’s milk you guys. I can’t even, I’m so excited. Fresh raw goat’s milk makes my heart happy and also my motivation for getting up at the crack of dawn and before the sun goes down to milk these two (I’ll give credit to my dad who also does a lot of the work in the caring of Sage and Dill).
I know some of you are turning your nose up at the thought of drinking goat’s milk but that is because you’ve been given a wrong impression of what goats milk taste like. I know you’re thinking tangy and slightly sour, like the cheese you buy at the store. Well you are completely wrong. Goat’s milk actually taste nothing like the cheese, unless it turns “goaty” which is something we work to avoid. It is a milder and creamier version of cow’s milk.
Plus, milking keeps my sanity. Seriously, the quite of the barn, fresh air and bright morning sun is therapy. It is time to refresh and regroup from the day and slow down at night. But my absolute favorite thing about milking the goat’s is letting our girls be a part of it. These are Iowa values, to get your hands dirty, do chores and learn and grow from that. I love how our girls have taken to helping with goat chores, feeding, petting and entertaining.
I mean it really isn’t the prettiest site in all the world, just the normal chaos. So welcome to Iowa and welcome to our crazy but beautiful world where. Just remember, I warned you. It is very rarely when you will find our girls in perfectly matched outfits with hair done. I told you, real life all the time from now on.
Begin picture overload.
