The in-between. Do you feel the pressure here, too? The questions, the doubts, the fear, the unknown, and yet the yearning to find the ending? The messy-middle is where I’ve found myself for the last five years. It’s been painful, irritating, and downright debilitating at times.
But I don’t think this is what the messy middle is supposed to be. Maybe it isn’t even messy, but that is just another perception we’ve created around this middle? Perhaps this place, the middle of starting but not arriving is actually where the most growth and life occurs?
I know first hand how frustrating this place is. That’s why I thought it was essential to address the middle. To raise some questions and challenge you to think in a new way.
This week on the podcast, I interview my friend and mentor Mikaela Schaeffer. I ask her the tough questions about the messy middle, and she stops me right in my tracks and re-arranges every thought I had here. Take a listen to find out for yourself.
the need for the middle
The middle, the place in between where you started but yet to arrive. Whether it’s in health, in your marriage, in your purpose or your business, we all encounter this ‘middle’ ground. It’s a given in life. While I’ve spent years trying to avoid it, rush it, and even escape it, I still find myself here – in this middle place.
- I haven’t quite met my health goals or feel entirely well yet.
- I have just tapped the well with my business, but it’s yet to burst forth.
- Our marriage still seems to be lingering in this in-between.
I’ve felt my life has been void of thriving. While I’d like to have you pity me, I know we could all have a pity party for being here, in some way. But I’m starting to question if this too is just my perspective.
What if there is something so much more in the middle-space? Maybe instead of avoiding it, I should embrace it?
Inside the podcast, Mikaela challenged my view of the middle – she changed my perspective to see that maybe here is one of the best places. Because without the middle, we fail to grow, we fail to strive, to stay, and perhaps most importantly, we fail to learn who we really are.
don’t rush it
It’s easy to rush the middle looking for the end. Because we’ve been told the end is where our worth lies, the end is success, the end is thriving. But I’m wondering, do we ever succeed in the end if we can’t learn to thrive in the middle? Maybe we can, but can we withstand it?
If we don’t go through the middle and learn to grow, learn who we are and how to stay in it, will we ever learn how to manage the end?
Maybe the middle is the most critical aspect to it lasting – whatever “it” is to you.
My reminder to you is don’t rush it – wherever you are, let it be. The world will tell you to hustle, to move faster, and do more. But I think in ‘the hustle’ we can miss the here and here is the only place you can fully be you. Stop rushing and start learning. Let growth be your guide, who knows what you’ll find – maybe a new idea or desire that will allow you to finish and reign victorious.
Stay in it, don’t rush it and let growth be your guide.
This is the birthplace of health and the starting point of truly living.
