There is a lot of confusion around what beauty products to use and what not to! I’m always a fan of less is best. In this post, I share my {cheap} and natural skincare routine. Learn all the products I use, the make-up brands I love and when I use them!
I’ll be honest, I’m not a make-up or skincare expert. I know there are a lot of steps that people take to prevent aging, slathering endless creams in hopes that maybe those laugh lines will be just a bit more faint. I’m not arguing that they work – I mean they have to do something because we use them, right?
But honestly, I prefer to take the inside out approach to natural skincare. Taking care of what’s inside because that’s what shows on the outside. With that, I could be a bit better about taking care of my skin – but honestly, for me, the best method is less is best.
Which got me researching and digging – asking the question, does our skin need a break just like our digestive system? Should we be incorporating a skin fast?
You can read all about a skin fast here and why it can help your acne.
For me, the more I leave my skin alone, the healthier it seems to be. So that’s why I’ve stuck to this basic and simplistic natural skincare routine — of course, remembering to keep it seasonal.
MORNING ROUTINE
My morning skincare routine is more disciplined. Starting before I apply my make-up with my attempt to keep my skin moisturized.
Step one: Witch Hazel Toner
What is Witch Hazel, you wonder? It’s derived from a flowering plant with the leaves, bark, and twigs of the shrub being used to create this liquid product.
The benefits are numerous, including being soothing, acting as an anti-inflammatory, and having antioxidant properties.
In terms of skincare, witch hazel can help with everything from tightening pores to firming the skin. It’s a great natural toner I use before jade rolling my face.
Step two: Jade Rolling
Jade rolling helps with lymphatic fluid movement – and I’m always a fan of this. It helps liven up the skin while getting rid of the puffy bags around your eyes. I do a quick routine moving from my forehead, around my eyes, through my cheeks, and down my neck. It takes less than 2 minutes.
Here is a simple tutorial of how I jade roll my face.
Step three: Cocokind Facial Repair Oil
I know it sounds counterintuitive to add oil before makeup, but I’ve found that my makeup glides on smoother and looks more vibrant. Not to mention, it balances the oils on my skin, giving me the perfect combination of neutral skin.
For best use, apply five-ten minutes before you apply your make-up.
Step four: Juice Beauty Foundation
It’s been difficult for me to find a natural foundation that covers my redness and doesn’t feel like I’m caking my face in frosting. Juice Beauty has been the perfect blend for me. Not too thick, not too light, and liquid enough to rub or brush in my face.
Step five: apply make-up
I’ve mixed up my make-up routine several different times – to settle on what seems to work for my skin. Here are some of my favorite natural products – with the right price-tag.
I’ve also listed what safety numbers they are on the Skin Deep App.
- Concealer: Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigment Perfecting Concealer {EWG rating:2}
- Setting Powder: W3LL People Bio Brightener Invisible Powder {EWG rating: 1}
- Blush/Bronzer: Root Pretty Blush + Bronzer {not listed}
- Eye Shadow / Brow Shadow: E.L.F. Eye Shadow Palate {EWG rating: 3-4}
- Eye Liner: Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner {EWG rating: 2}
- Mascara: Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extension Mascara {EWG rating: 2}
- Lipstick / Lip Gloss: W3LL People LipGloss + LipStick {EWG rating: 2}
EVENING ROUTINE
Evenings are when I give my skin a break. Just like with food, I think it’s important to give my skin time to rest, to rebalance the bacteria and breathe {even though some argue that your skin doesn’t breath}.
Minimalistic is the way I prefer. Here is my typical nighttime routine.
Step one: Primally Pure Cleansing Oil
More oil, I know, but there is a scientific principle called the oil cleansing method that utilizes beneficial oils to penetrate deep into pores that dissolve grime and build-up. Just massage it in your skin and wash with cold water and pat dry.
Step two: Face Massage / Dry Brushing
I wouldn’t say I do this every night – but again, I think it’s necessary and critical to move lymphatic fluid in our body. These are the simple steps that can make such a huge difference. It’s similar to foam rolling but for your face. Helping to prevent wrinkles, boost collagen production, and give the overall feel or brighter skin.
Use your hands in light circular motions or try one of these stones to massage your face.
After the face massage, follow up with a full-body dry brushing session {lasting no more than four minutes}.
How healthy the skin on your face is, is equivalent to the rest of your body. Make sure you don’t just focus on your face but the entire surface of your skin.
Step two: LET IT BE!
Let your skin rest. It needs a break from endless products that your body has to work to provide balance to, not to mention remove the toxins of. Sometimes, the best thing we can do for our skin is to let it be and let your body do what it does best.
Skin fasting – this is what I call it.
Occasionally: Juice Beauty Overnight Cream
This thick but effective moisturizer is what I prefer for fall and winter. When my skin is dry, and the air is drier – it’s nice to have a solid moisturizer to keep my skin healthy and intact.
I don’t add it every night, just occasionally, especially if I’ve spent a more extended period outside in the wind and the cold.
BONUS TOOLS
Remember, acne and skin problems are not a hormonal problem but an immune problem. That means any tool to help boost your immune system can help diminish acne and redness. Here are some of my favorite tools to enhance my skin and increase my immune system at the same time!
