I have to admit something, I’m not what you call a product junkie. Not because I don’t want to be, I mean I am slightly envious of all you pretty ladies out there who really know how to properly apply make-up, with brushes and all. Yes, you who knows how to use the appropriate amount of blush, have perfectly glossed lips and painted nails. I tend to take the more au naturale approach simply because I’m incompetent when it comes to knowing the in’s and out’s of make-up application and do my hair…psst, please someone send help.
My motto when I got to the salon is do what you want. I trust you because I wouldn’t know what to do or what not to do. Are you embarrassed for me? Yeah, I know I should really figure this out before our three girls are old enough to learn. Oh wow, that thought is overwhelming. Luckily God new this wouldn’t be my strong suit, that is why he blessed me with straight, silky hair and three girls who look to have the same.
Besides for not really knowing the ins and outs of proper application and what the heck to do with my hair I honestly was always fearful of cosmetics due to the chemical load. We can’t deny the fact that most of us have no stinkin’ idea what is in the countless products we slather on our body daily, let alone think about the consequence. So let me fill you in before you rush to the shower to scrub the nasty remains off of your skin.
First you must know that the safety of our cosmetics isn’t highly regulated (or regulated at all). In fact, if you use ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ products the truth is they probably aren’t really that. Unfortunately our products do not undergo the regulation for using such words as would our food. While our cosmetics are not highly regulated they are chocked full of chemicals. In fact of the 84,000 chemicals on the market today, many of which are in objects that people come into contact with every day, only about 1 percent have been studied for safety (1). It’s time we break up with your makeup and learn about toxic free options that put you first.
This pretty much assumes that our children in the United States are virtual ‘guinea pigs in an uncontrolled experiment’. Sounds impressive right? NOT! You guys, this is scary stuff. Our children are walking science experiments that are going bad, terribly, terribly bad. In the last 34 years only 5 chemical s have been banned (2).
That is why they estimate that adults have on average of 500-700 chemicals in their bodies at any given time. The chemicals that are living within our bodies can be passed to our unborn babies. Speaking of babies, scientist have found an average of 232 chemicals in the cord blood of babies. These chemicals were coming from a wide array of products such as shampoo and conditions as well as plastics and other common household products.
The reality, our cosmetics are cocktails of industrially produced and potentially dangerous chemicals that are damaging our health and in some cases rather than delivering on the promise of “anti-aging” are actually speeding up the process of aging. Just to touch on an upcoming post, this massive onslaught of chemicals in influencing a drastic shift in our micro-biome (our gut bacteria) which is suppose to train our immune system on what to destroy and what not to. Unfortunately this shift has caused a malfunction in the communication which causes a malfunction in our immune system (3).
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Next week, we will get more into the nutrition impact of these chemicals but for now lets rest in the fact that almost all cosmetics on the market are full of really nasty ingredients, carcinogens, pesticides and endocrine disruptors. They are toxic to our bodies and most definitely to our children and unborn children.
Now usually when I get to this point in the talk I would say go to EWG, which you most definitely should and rate your products. If they number that arises is above a three, ditch it. The closer to one the better it is and then I would tell you, good luck finding anything that will work.
That is why I am ecstatic to share some exciting news.
