How do you actually love to eat healthy? It’s a big feat, isn’t it? I mean it sounds good initially but once we get in it seems so scary, so unrealistic and not something you are willing to do. So what is the secret? It’s right here inside this post and podcast!
Stop for one moment, now imagine your life full of health, joy, and happiness! What does that look like? Soak those thoughts in and let them fill you because I don’t think it’s that far off.
Unfortunately, the problem isn’t just dreaming of what would be different if you were living a healthy life, it’s the action it takes to get there. This action is generally what stops us dead in our tracks. Mostly because it is so outside our norm and rather than conforming new things to our life we try to cram our life into new ideas.
This becomes much easier said than done.
This is also why 99.99999% of all diets fail because that’s not actually the life you were after. I don’t think anyone ever envisions themselves counting points, calories or beating yourself up in the mirror in your last hours.
We long for legacy, for joy, happiness and a life worth something, right?
Today I took a break from our normal scheduled podcasts to bring you one that I thought was of utmost importance. In fact, I feel like it could be the secret you are missing to actually doing the things you want to do.
A process that allows you to fit what you want into your own life and actually get excited about it.
Not to mention, it’s my first ever live recorded podcast and it was so much fun!

what’s the secret?
SPOILER ALERT: The secret is living within your values.
Okay, that seemed a little anticlimactic. But I’m serious, it is those values that create drive and desire in your life making what you want and conforming it into a passion. The problem is “we think” we know what our values are, but few actually do.
Well not instinctually. This is because we live so much of our lives in the conscious state allowing external influences to have a great impact over what “we think” we should be doing rather than living doing the things we want, which come from our subconscious mind.
The instinctual passions you’ve possibly had from birth. Your gifts, those things that bring you great joy and happiness and your dreams. From these things you can take what you want to accomplish, like living healthy and fit it into what you really value.
why we fail
The reason we fail is we don’t know what we actually value. Which leads to us living outside of them creating just a mediocre life that is so darn challenging and uncomfortable. You’re living in a constant chase rather than in contentment for where you are and where you’re going.
Our reality is that without doing the proper exercises to uncover your real values we most often will default to the values “we think” we should have. Which means that we often default to our values being centered around: family, faith, health, work.
None of which are bad, in fact, they are all really good. But they don’t explain anything about you or what it is that you value about them. They are the surface level remarks that we think we love but we don’t really know why.
So my challenge is to do the exercises to go deeper and get more specific.
how this works
Once you start to create a mind map you can start to put the pieces together into ideas, words, actions that you really do love, those things that fill you up. Let me give you an example. My values before I completed the exercise were:
- Faith
- Family
- Health
- Adventure
What I found was that while I do have a strong faith, a value in faith wasn’t enough to give me a desire to really study and learn God’s word. Just like health not being enough of a tug on my innermost being to stop me from eating any and all the food the day after I started a cleanse.
What does stop me, make me crave and desire what I’m after?
the mind map
Through doing the mindmap I learned there were some great themes in my life that really uncover who I really am. These included things like:
- Working outside in the garden
- Taking hikes, kayaking, just being in nature
- Painting, coloring, drawing
- Creating new projects
- Learning about health and reading books
- Learning and uncovering more about God and who he is
- Sharing, teaching, and speaking to others and groups
Obviously, I was way more specific, but you get the idea. I wrote a list of about 50 different things that give me drive, desire, motivation, encouragement, happiness and great joy.
From there I was able to start seeing themes and really focus in on what about my family, faith and health gave me desire to know and grow in them? In the end, here’s what I found my true values were:
- Adventure
- Connection
- Growth/Learning
- Creation
Knowing this changes everything. Now I’m able to take what I want, like eating healthier and move it into what I value. So rather than saying I want to eat healthier to lose x amount of pounds {obviously not motivating for anyone}.
- I want to create new and healthy recipes to help me live healthier {notice the word create}.
- I want to workout so that I can be fit and ready to kayak this summer.
- I want to read my Bible and know more about God because I value learning and sharing.
What you want now has a meaning that you can get behind.
That is change.
Now it’s your turn
If you listened to the podcast {it really will help as I walk someone through this process live} you will find that it’s like a veil gets lifted and you are able to reignite that fire and that passion. If you’re not passionate then you probably need to go back to the drawing board and dig a little deeper.
So now it’s your turn. I’ve created a free download that helps you get to the heart of your own values, teaching you how to mind map and uncover what it is that gives you drive. You can grab that download below.
