The inside scoop and my own personal journey and commitment is below. But I wanted to let you start downloading my checklist of 25 simple but BIG ways to have a healthier New Year. Let us finally set resolutions that last this year.
my personal struggle
Last year at this exact time I was dreaming. Dreaming up visions and building excitement and determined nothing was going to hold me back.
But it did.
Not two weeks after I made a commitment that 2016 was going to be “my year,” I watched as my life slowly began to crumble around me. By February I found myself sobbing in the shower, in March the shower turned to the bathroom floor and by April I was mad at nearly everyone and everything I had in my life, good and bad.
I was mad at the my family, the world, but mostly God.
Yet through this I gradually and ever so slowly managed to see light through the gasps of air in the waves that seemed to keep me under nearly drowning all hope, all joy and excitement for my life.
I had done everything right.
I had followed all of the perfect systems.
I was doing my best to be everything for everyone.
Yet, nothing was working. And I mean nothing, or what seemed like nothing.
And before the year even began my dreams, goals and resolutions for the year were gone in a flash.
what I wished I knew about resolutions
Better stated, what I wished I knew about setting resolutions that last. Because statistically speaking just 8% of people will actually complete their resolution (and that number may be generous).
There are a lot of assumptions as why people don’t complete them. But the same goes for most of our goals, weight loss plans, etc. They rarely get achieved. But why?
I believe it’s because we are a society that is really good at sticking to rules, plans and strategies but we’re really bad at living life.
Let me explain.
Some of us are really great dieters, business owners, moms, dads, students whatever you are but when you look at life outside of those things, they’re crumbling.
What I’m trying to say is that we put so much emphasis on being really great at things that we miss being great at the most important thing, living life. We have a hard time integrating our health, nutrition, jobs, and other duties with our life. Then we lose joy, we lose a sense of ourselves, we lose hope and purpose and we miss out on precious moments we’ll never get back. This leads to regret, feelings of failure and guilt. So we quit.
And the vicious cycle repeats itself.
the simple solution to setting resolutions that last
So I’m going to propose a new solution to setting resolutions that last. The simple solution is to live life.
Okay, that is so not helpful.
What I mean by that is to become self-aware. To evaluate yourself, your goals, your heart, your calling, YOU! Not what you think you should be doing or what other people are telling you to do. Not what you see your friends doing on social media or joining the next fad diet.
But fully stepping away from that, setting it aside and instead taking time to know yourself.
To know your life. To know your desires.
To accept you. To love you. To develop confidence in you.
To stop segmenting your life into tiny boxes that create a cluttered, disorganized, chaotic life and instead choose a simply minimalistic life that weaves together creating your perfectly unique story.
But again, that story can only be perfectly unique if you fully own you.
This means choosing to be curious instead of afraid, accepting instead of exacting, and compassionate instead of cruel.
This means accepting you. Owning you. Believing in you. And through this honoring you.
the resolution that will transform your life
Lets instead try to create a resolution that can change the course of your life. A resolution that can bring you more abundance, joy and hope than ever before is simply this;
Practice self-care.
Wait, what?
Yes, it is as simple as practicing self-care. Getting in-tuned with yourself. Knowing yourself and honoring all that you are.
Sounds simple but I can’t tell you how profound this one thing could be.
Because the reality is you will never find satisfaction in chasing something. The only way that chasing something becomes satisfying is if you are satisfied in the now. You have to learn to love yourself exactly as you are right now.
And loving yourself, means making time for yourself.
What seems selfish can actually have some pretty substantial rewards. In the end, practicing self-care will allow you to be more, give more, love more to everyone else around you.
the beginning steps
Let the battle of life end.
Stop trying to be everything to everyone.
Say no more than yes.
Let silence win.
Learn to love white space.
Find joy in the everyday.
Let yourself feel small wins.
Allow yourself space.
Step into your uniqueness.
Find beauty in your flaws.
Embrace every imperfection.
Let life fill your breath.
Let no moment go unnoticed.
Let yourself be loved by first loving yourself.
the action plan
Start by committing to you. Committing to honoring your body, listening to your body and creating self awareness.
This takes setting down all of the ways, systems, rules and plans out there that claim they have your answer. Letting go of what others have told you to be true and instead listening to what you know to be true. Stepping in and committing to honoring all that you are.
Once you do that then you can slowly start transforming your day so that you create a schedule and a life that fosters self-care and watch as this transforms your health, joy and purpose in life.
It’s the secret to getting more done in less time. Finding more joy and excitement in your marriage. Deepening friendships. Growing and training up children. Feeling the presences of God.
Stop beating your body and your mind into submission and instead create a healthy relationship that makes life seem so natural, so simple, so joyful.
